About the Chamber
As a not-for-profit volunteer organization of about 650 members, the Greater Southwest Houston Chamber’s policies and direction are set by a 21-member board, which includes officers, division vice chairs, and directors. The 2007 Program of Action will be accomplished by five divisions, each with several committees. The divisions are Business Development, Community Services, Finance, Member Services, and Special Projects. We also have two 501(c)(3) entities, the Helen & Clyde Willbern Scholarship Foundation, and Leadership 20/20.
The committees engage in activities in the areas of education, economic development, business resources, government affairs, special activities, and a wide variety of other interests. The Chamber’s Leadership 20/20 program is in its 15th year of providing area professionals with an overview of what is happening in the fields of criminal justice, education, quality of life, the arts, civic engagement, state and local government, health and human services, and media.
The Chamber also holds several fun fundraising activities each year including the popular Best Taste in Town dine-around event held in the spring that features member restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, and other food providers; an annual golf tournament; and the Chairman’s Gala. The gala signals the end of one chairman’s year and the beginning of the next. There is also a reception each spring when the Chamber awards scholarships to high school seniors in Career and Technology Education programs.
We recognize rising star professional women, and women who have made an impact on their communities, at the Southwest Shakers luncheon event in the fall. There is something for everyone on the Chamber’s calendar!
