Sharpstown
Sharpstown was the largest subdivision in the United States when developer Frank Sharp unveiled the area’s plans in 1954. Today it includes Houston’s first air-conditioned mall and more than 3,000 homes. Sharpstown is a predominantly middle-class community with good freeway access, friendly neighbors, and well-kept brick homes. The active civic association has underwritten constable patrols, deed restriction enforcement, and esplanade projects.
To encourage redevelopment in the Sharpstown area, the City of Houston has created a Tax Incremental Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) and a Public Improvement District (PID). The TIRZ and the PID help maintain and enhance public spaces and provide funds for marketing and promoting the area. Recently a management district was also established. With its winding streets, large yards, and quiet neighborhoods, Sharpstown remains a fantastic family bargain. Homes are selling from $110,000 to over $250,000.
A prominent institution in the Sharpstown community is Houston Baptist University (HBU). Founded in 1960, HBU is a highly respected private university located on a 100-acre campus just off the Southwest Freeway at 7502 Fondren. Strong programs in pre-med and nursing are among the 45 areas of study at HBU. Others include arts and humanities, business and economics, education and behavioral sciences, and communications and mathematics. HBU has approximately 2,600 students including graduate and undergraduate students.
The busiest emergency room in the city is located in the Sharpstown area at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, a comprehensive JCAHO-accredited hospital. The city’s largest and most sophisticated suburban hospital, it has been serving the community since 1977. In 1999, the 80,000-square-foot Memorial Hermann Wellness Center opened as Houston’s most complete medical/fitness health facility. In 2006, the Heart & Vascular Institute – Southwest became Houston’s first freestanding heart institute. The seven-floor, 200,000-square-foot facility on the Southwest Hospital campus is equipped with 45 beds, a non-invasive diagnostic center, a pharmacy, five catheterization and electrophysiology labs, and ultra-high-tech operating suites.
Several private schools serve Sharpstown, and Houston Independent School District elementary campuses include Neff, Sutton, Bonham, and White. Students attend either Sharpstown Middle School or Jane Long Middle School. Sharpstown High School has a magnet program that concentrates on developing leadership skills.
